Timing Chain Replacement Cost & Pricing
Replace a worn, stretched, or rattling timing chain and tensioner that keeps the camshaft and crankshaft in sync. Unlike a timing belt, chains are metal and designed to last the life of the engine — but they can wear, especially if oil changes are neglected. Includes chain, guides, tensioner, and required gaskets. Oil and coolant are typically replaced as part of the job.
Typical Timing Chain Replacement cost
$920–$2,880, with an average estimate of $1,680 before vehicle-specific adjustments.
What to expect
Difficulty: complex. Typical labor time: 8–14 hours.
Mechanic's tip
The most common symptom is a rattling or slapping noise from the front of the engine on cold starts that fades after a minute or two — this is the stretched chain slapping before oil pressure builds up. Code P0008 or P0009 can also point to timing chain stretch. This job typically opens up the entire front of the engine, so it's smart to replace the front crankshaft seal, VVT solenoids, and valve cover gaskets at the same time to avoid paying for access labor twice. Using the correct oil weight and sticking to oil change intervals is the number one way to extend chain life.
