Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) Replacement Cost & Pricing
Replace the throttle position sensor that tells the ECM how far the accelerator is pressed. A faulty TPS causes hesitation, poor fuel economy, erratic idle, sudden surges, or a check engine light. Most modern engines use an integrated electronic throttle body with a built-in TPS.
Typical Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) Replacement cost
$150–$420, with an average estimate of $220 before vehicle-specific adjustments.
What to expect
Difficulty: moderate. Typical labor time: 0.5–1.5 hours.
Mechanic's tip
Codes P0120–P0124 point to the TPS circuit. Before replacing, clean the throttle body — carbon buildup on the bore can cause the same symptoms and a $10 can of throttle body cleaner might solve it. On drive-by-wire systems (no physical throttle cable), the TPS is part of the throttle body assembly; confirm whether the sensor alone is replaceable or if the full throttle body must be swapped. After replacement, a throttle body relearn procedure may be required before the idle stabilizes.
