Ignition Coil Replacement Cost & Pricing

Replace a failed ignition coil that provides the high-voltage spark to fire the spark plug. A bad coil causes a misfire, rough idle, or a check engine light with a specific cylinder misfire code.

Typical Ignition Coil Replacement cost

$140โ€“$450, with an average estimate of $240 before vehicle-specific adjustments.

What to expect

Difficulty: easy. Typical labor time: 0.75โ€“2.5 hours.

Mechanic's tip

Modern coil-on-plug (COP) engines have one coil per cylinder. A P030X misfire code (P0301 = cylinder 1, etc.) almost always points to the coil or spark plug on that cylinder โ€” swap the suspect coil with an adjacent one and see if the misfire code follows. If it does, it's the coil. Replace in sets on high-mileage engines since adjacent coils are often the same age.
