Mechanic's tip
Before replacing the entire shifter assembly, check the brake-shift interlock solenoid — a failed solenoid prevents the shifter from moving out of Park and is a much cheaper fix. On column-mounted shifters, inspect the shifter cable and bushings first since those wear out before the shifter itself. Many modern push-button or electronic gear selectors are far more expensive than traditional mechanical shifters.
