Fuel Pressure Regulator Replacement Cost & Pricing
Replace the fuel pressure regulator that maintains consistent fuel pressure to the injectors. A failing regulator causes rich or lean conditions, rough idle, black smoke, fuel economy loss, hard starting, or a fuel smell from the intake. On returnless fuel systems (most modern vehicles), the regulator is integrated into the fuel pump module in the tank.
Typical Fuel Pressure Regulator Replacement cost
$160–$580, with an average estimate of $300 before vehicle-specific adjustments.
What to expect
Difficulty: moderate. Typical labor time: 1–3 hours.
Mechanic's tip
A fuel-soaked vacuum hose connected to the regulator is a classic sign of failure — pull the hose off; if fuel drips out, the diaphragm inside has ruptured. Codes P0087 (fuel pressure too low) and P0088 (too high) often point here. On returnless/in-tank systems, the regulator is part of the fuel pump assembly and is replaced with the pump. Always relieve fuel system pressure before opening any fuel line — the system holds 40–60 psi.
