Fuel Filter Replacement Cost & Pricing
Replace the inline or in-tank fuel filter that removes contaminants from the fuel before it reaches the injectors. A clogged fuel filter causes hard starting, hesitation under load, poor fuel economy, and can eventually starve the fuel pump. Many vehicles since 2000 use a filter integrated in the fuel pump assembly inside the tank.
Typical Fuel Filter Replacement cost
$80–$300, with an average estimate of $160 before vehicle-specific adjustments.
What to expect
Difficulty: easy. Typical labor time: 0.5–2 hours.
Mechanic's tip
Check whether your vehicle has an external (inline) filter or an in-tank filter. External filters are typically under the car along the frame rail or in the engine bay and run $80–$150. In-tank filters are part of the fuel pump module and are only replaced when the pump is replaced. Diesel vehicles have both a primary and secondary filter and are especially sensitive to contamination — change them on schedule. Replacing the filter is cheap insurance against a failed fuel pump ($400–$900).
