Axle Shaft (CV Axle) Replacement Cost & Pricing
Replace a worn or damaged CV (constant velocity) axle shaft that transfers power from the transmission to the drive wheels. A failing axle causes a clicking noise when turning, vibration, or loss of drive. Driver and passenger sides differ in length; some AWD/4WD vehicles also have replaceable rear axles.
Typical Axle Shaft (CV Axle) Replacement cost
$280–$980, with an average estimate of $550 before vehicle-specific adjustments.
What to expect
Difficulty: moderate. Typical labor time: 1.5–4 hours.
Mechanic's tip
A clicking or clunking noise when making tight turns — especially during acceleration — is the most reliable sign of a failing outer CV joint. On FWD vehicles the driver side (left) axle is longer and often pricier to replace. A torn CV boot caught early is cheaper to fix than waiting for the joint to run dry and fail. Remanufactured axles are a reliable and cost-effective option for most vehicles.
